Our Certificate in International Development Management Learning Journey

One of IMA’s summer highlights last year was our three week Certificate in International Development Management training. This programme combines our Leadership and Management in International Development, and our Monitoring and Evaluation for Results workshops. We really had some excellent participants join us. During the three weeks we welcomed participants from Ukraine, Tanzania, Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria, the Philippines, Nepal, Burma, Vietnam, Bangladesh and the small but beautiful St Vincent, and organisations including ICRC, The Caribbean Dev Bank, the African Union, the Government of Botswana, the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Programme (it was amazing to learn about the success of this program!) and the Nigeria Governors Forum, amongst others.

Our participants from the Philippines and Ukraine managed to pack in the most extracurricular trips I have ever seen; as well as joining the IMA planned visit to London, bowling, dinner and traditional English tea, they also went to Bath, to Dover, to Leeds castle, the famous English chalk cliffs and I’m sure I have missed some here …all this and they were still at the sessions early each day…well done for this you, know who you are! Our participants made this video for us recording their learning journey. They made this as a surprise for Silvia and I, and when we Chris, our MD happened to be there so everyone was very happy all around.

For our practical field experience we worked with the Trust for Developing Communities, which provides support for Maha’s Multicultural Coffee Mornings (MMCM). The purpose of this trip was to give the participants (all experienced development professionals) the opportunity to try-out some advanced field assessment techniques in an unfamiliar environment and without much advanced preparation, i.e. a real context.  We practiced Cognitive, and Community Mapping, Pairwise Ranking, conducted Focus Group Discussions, and direct interviews. These methods were selected to immediately build analysis so we could share the outputs straight away with the MMCM partners. The next day, the data gathered was used to create a Theories of Change for Maha. This three full weeks of learning and discovery combined for a powerful and practical developmental experience, and was thoroughly enjoyed by the course facilitators, the participants, and everyone else who became involved!  You can read about the learning objectives here, or downloading our factsheet.
