Chris is providing consulting services to support work being done in the inception phase of a programme to support FAOs strategy for fisheries and aquaculture in Africa. The main objectives of this programme are threefold. Firstly, there is a need to identify and address weak governance in this sector. Secondly, the programme aims to enhance the capacity of regional institutions to implement responsible fisheries and aquaculture practices, and lastly, enhance the capacity of fishing and aquaculture communities to reduce their vulnerability to natural disasters and climate change.
There will be strengthened regional governance systems, policy frameworks and instruments, and an enhanced contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to poverty alleviation, food security and economic growth through improved sustainable management.
Chris will be working with a team from the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department in Rome, Italy and members of New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) office in Midrand, South Africa from March to May 2011.
