Indonesia, August 2009
IMA were delighted to work once again with the American Red Cross, this time with the Indonesia team, providing a 5 day workshop on “People Skills for Development Managers”. It was held in Banda Aceh 10-14th August 2009.
As the Tsunami Recovery Programme is starting to reach its closing stages with the programmes completing in 2010, there are many challenges the teams face in balancing the completion and embedding of the programmes while at the same time positively managing the staff’s concerns regarding their job security and next steps. The workshop focused on core skills for managing people effectively, and included leadership, communication, coaching, change management, team building, performance management and managing ourselves well.
The underlying approach we adopted was that of a solution focus, using an appreciative, rather than a problem focused methodology, which was enthusiastically received by the participants. The participants were all experienced managers and were able to share ideas and good practice between them. At the end of the week, they completed both individual action plans and also agreed on some key changes they wished to make in their offices around building their teams, giving constructive feedback and coaching their staff.
We wish the team every success in their programme and look forward to staying in touch with them as their plans progress.
