Bangkok November 2006
Our long-standing course in Thailand is always popular and November 2006 was no exception. This recent course combined participants from the private, public and NGO sectors from: Botswana, Tajikistan, Ethiopia, Germany/Indonesia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Liberia, Zambia, and Malawi. The practical M&E project undertaken during the course included groupwork and participatory field visits which allowed participants to practice some of their new skills in a realistic setting as well as finding out about life & business along the riverways outside of central Bangkok. With the close support of their tutors and local translators, the study teams planned and executed a rapid impact assessment and made recommendations for an M&E system to address the information needs of multiple stakeholders. Practical exercises in the class included developing an evaluation framework, indicator setting, planning an appropriate/integrated monitoring system, research tools, data analysis, communication and how to get ideas implemented. Participants met regularly outside the class both to appreciate the vibrant atmosphere of Bangkok together and to share ideas. During our leisure time we visited a spectacular theatre, got close to some real sharks (in the safety of an aquarium,) played a friendly bowling competition and relaxed en board a charming river cruise. This will be a course of long-lasting memories.
