Monitoring and Evaluation, May scheduled Course

Our latest Monitoring and Evaluation in Development Course was held in Cape Town from 3 – 14 May at the Winchester Mansions Hotel at Seapoint.

Course participants came from Bolivia, Sudan, Spain, Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi and Croatia and represented the UN Mission in the Sudan, WFP, UNFPA, UNICEF, and MEFMI (Macro-Economic and Financial Management Institute for Eastern and Southern Africa).

Most of the participants faced the challenge of setting up or restructuring M&E systems on their return home. The course provided them with tools to identify information requirements, to collect and analyse data and to communicate it as information for management decision making.  The learning process was enriched by plenty of practical sessions and by examples derived from the extensive field experience of the two course trainers. In the second week participants put some of their learning into practice by carrying out a rapid appraisal of a youth development programme, Hoops 4 Hope in Guguletu Community. The programme works with schools, using basketball and soccer to emphasise fun and sportsmanship while also delivering a life-skills curriculum that enables young people to make better decisions about social issues such as HIV prevention, conflict resolution, drug/alcohol abuse and gender issues. Both sides benefited from the appraisal and we hope to repeat it next year. For more information about Hoops 4 Hope, go to: www.hoopsafrica.org
