London, April 2007
On Friday 20th April Anne-Marie Harrison from IMA had a one-to-one day with Nich Kumah, Director for Afrikids Ghana. AfriKids is a Child Rights Organisation, which works along indigenous communities in Ghana to improve the quality of life for rejected and vulnerable children. The charity specifically targets the root causes of the children's problems, by improving community support services and by providing access to basic education and primary health care. It has grown rapidly since it was registered in Ghana in 2005 and with partner organizations now reaches over 80,000 children.
The Ghana Director has always been personally highly involved in the many projects Afrikids manages and whilst wanting to maintain that personal commitment, knew he needed to find a different way of leading and managing the organization. The programme for Nich was put together based on his specific needs and during the day we worked together to use a selection of practical models, techniques and tools to review how Nich could build on his personal and successful style of leadership to develop a more strategic and sustainable approach to managing the continuing ongoing growth of the organisation. Andy Thornton, Afrikid Strategic Development Director, based in the UK, joined us and also provided invaluable perspective.
Topics included: • Leadership and management; • Implementing strategic plans with staff working in different locations, and with partner organizations; • Developing delegation plans and • Practical tips for making the best use of his time and to help him get home at a reasonable time - some evenings at least!
The evening before the training, Afrikids had provided a presentation, hosted by GlaxoSmithKline, a major donor, to thank all their supporters and update them on the current projects and successes which IMA attended. It was an inspiring evening, and IMA are delighted to have been asked to work with this enterprising, hard working and successful organisation. The following testimonial was given by AfriKids: “IMA’s training for AfriKids was matched exactly to the needs of our organisation. Having identified areas for improvement in some of our key staff we approached IMA to see how they could assist. The result was an intensive day of training that drew on IMA’s extensive and well developed resources. Our trainer, Anne-Marie Harrison, made significant efforts when constructing the training to consult with our staff both in the UK and Ghana to ensure the day was closely tailored to our organisation’s and employee’s needs. The training has resulted in a clear and documented direction, developed in a collaborative and open environment.”
