IMA has been running the Issues, Themes and Strategies in Development Management for 6 years now at the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex University, and during this time we have established an impressive core of key trainers and facilitators, all with extensive and very current expertise in their particular fields. This level of experience allows participants to explore in considerable detail the current emerging issues and themes facing the global development community, and how these can be applied to their local perspective. This focus on macro initiatives, and their relevance to local development approaches is a key aspect of the course.
This year we had 14 participants representing Nigeria, Jordan, Ghana and Botswana, from both the private, public and NGO sector. Rigorous debate was encouraged to see how changes in development approaches effect different sectors and this was guided and facilitated by 13 different trainers. Participants explored for example the new frontiers in Development with Robert Chambers- Research Associate at IDS; Poverty, measurement and progress with Bob Baulch, Research Fellow, IDS; Globalisation and Free trade with Peter Newell Senior Research Fellow at Warwick University and Celine Mckeown Co-Founder of AlterNative; the Development impact of HIV/AIDS with Jerker Edstrom, Research Fellow at IDS and the Psychology of Development with Jane Gilbert, clinical psychologist. Other areas covered on the course included the importance of Migration on Development, Leadership, Policy – Advocacy and Practice, Civil society in the development process, Sustainable Rural Livelihoods, Microfinance and recent changes in Donor funding mechanisms.
