A successful Results-based ME course delivered in Brighton

In June the IMA Results-based M&E course was successfully delivered to a group of twelve development professionals from the private and public sectors, including UN agencies, non-governmental organisations (Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, ActionAid, Comic Relief), Central Bank of Nigeria, Chevron Nigeria, and the Performance Management Unit at the Water Ministry in Jordan. It was run by Laurence Sewell and Catherine Lowery, experienced international consultants in the design and implementation of monitoring and evaluation systems.

The course provides a clear, step-by-step approach for those seeking either to introduce an organisation wide approach to results based M&E for the first time, or to overhaul and re-focus their current systems. Participants were taken through a series of broad principles that apply to RBME and shown through practical case work and examples how the application of principles could be applied in different contexts - M&E in joint programming, SWAPs and national strategic planning. It also examined the issues in the context of participants' specific responsibilities. Group work was an integral part of the course that brought out practical issues that were related to the working challenges for the participants.

The course provided a forum for lively debate and discussion on improving accountability and measurability of aid development initiatives, and demonstrated the relevance of RBM&E in relation to funder and investor requirements to demonstrate performance and value for money. There was high participant satisfaction with the way the week proceeded and the value and learning they took from the course. It demonstrated the value of IMA structured courses that have the flexibility to meet the needs of specific target groups with different levels of skills and know-how.
